Olive Oil + Vinegar Homemade Wood Cleaner

olive oil and vinegar homemade wood cleaner

This homemade wood cleaner was my first successful attempt at a DIY cleaning product. A little over two years ago, while my husband and I were trying to avoid the store like plague to pay off some major debt, I stumbled upon this quick and frugal solution out of sheer necessity.

First, learning how to make things from scratch is so important! You will save so, so, so much money by making cleaners and other household essentials yourself. If you are intimidated by DIY, just start small. Like with this olive oil and vinegar homemade wood cleaner.

I had guests coming over, my pledge bottle was empty and I could autograph my furniture. (And I’m only sharing this photograph with you because we’re friends and I like to keep it real.)

I read about people making homemade cleaners for years, but I was intimidated by new-to-me ingredients like borax, washing soda, castile soap, and vegetable glycerin. Plus, why were there so many different recipes for wood cleaners?! Could there truly be 101 different wood cleaners with different chemical makeups and measurements that all work? And what if I picked the one wrong recipe and it turned my dining room table green?

As I compared a dozen different recipes, I noticed that two ingredients appeared again and again. And these two ingredients happened to be in my pantry: olive oil and vinegar.

I mixed the two ingredients and it worked!

Two years later, I can tell you from my personal experience that this mixture works well and doesn’t harm any types of wood that I’ve come across.

Are you ready for the recipe?

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of Olive Oil
  • 1/4 cup of Vinegar

Optional: If you are in love with the nice smells of commercial cleaners, you can also add an essential oil of your choice. But this is completely up to you!

Directions

Mix the two ingredients above and pour into a new spray bottle. like the green one pictured below from the dollar store.

This recipe makes a large batch and it will last for months, if not a year or more.

So what do I love about this version of homemade wood cleaner? Here are a few of my thoughts on this combination after two years of use:

  • I always have olive oil and vinegar in the pantry.
  • The vinegar smell goes away after a minute or two so there is no need to fear the smell. Or like I mentioned above, add essential oils for scent such as orange or lemongrass. <—My 2 favorite smells!
  • This recipe helps you avoid using aerosol cans, like most name brand wood cleaners and dusters, which are controversial for health and environmental reasons. (Isn’t everything bad you?!) 🙂
  • I’ve seen many variations that use olive oil, vinegar, and water, but after trying out both, I think it’s best to leave the water out. The thicker solution above coats the furniture longer and prevents dust from accumulating quickly. (The longer I have between cleaning, dusting or polishing my wood furniture the better!)
  • Plus, in my humble opinion, it works better than any commercial or homemade product I’ve ever used!

I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do!
